Pre-Dental Treatment Evaluation
TMJ Evaluation Before Major Dental Treatment

Planning Major Dental Treatment?
If you are considering orthodontic treatment, full-mouth reconstruction, extensive restorative treatment, or other procedures that may significantly change your bite or jaw position, a comprehensive TMJ evaluation may be recommended before treatment begins.
Many patients have pre-existing TMJ disorders or jaw muscle dysfunction that may not become apparent until after major dental treatment. Identifying these conditions beforehand can help guide treatment planning and reduce the risk of worsening jaw symptoms.
We Frequently Evaluate Patients Before:
• Orthodontic treatment
• Full-mouth reconstruction or rehabilitation
• Complex restorative treatment
• Occlusal rehabilitation
• Full-mouth implant reconstruction
• Extensive prosthodontic treatment
Comprehensive Evaluation
Your evaluation may include:
• Medical and dental history
• Comprehensive TMJ examination
• Jaw muscle evaluation
• Functional jaw movement assessment
• 3D CBCT imaging when indicated
• MRI referral when clinically appropriate
Collaboration with Your Dental Team
We work closely with your general dentist, orthodontist, prosthodontist, oral surgeon, periodontist, and other dental specialists to provide diagnostic information that supports comprehensive treatment planning.
Our role is not to determine how your dental treatment should be performed, but to evaluate the health of your jaw joints and masticatory system before significant dental treatment is initiated.
Our Goal
Our goal is to identify pre-existing TMJ disorders, muscle dysfunction, or other orofacial pain conditions before treatment begins, helping your dental team make informed decisions and providing you with the best opportunity for a successful long-term outcome.
