Types of Impressions We Take

At Trinity TMJ & Facial Pain Specialists, we use digital impressions to create:

  • TMJ splints and orthotics

  • Oral appliances for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)

  • Neurosensory stents

If you have had traditional impressions, you may remember biting into a tray filled with thick, goopy material.

Our digital scanner replaces those impression trays, making the process more comfortable for patients who tend to gag during traditional impressions.

The scanner captures a detailed 3D image of your teeth that we can view on the screen immediately. We can review the scan and rescan any areas that need more detail during the same visit, helping reduce the chance of delays in making and delivering your appliance.

How Long Do Digital Impressions Take?

We use a digital scanner to take impressions of your teeth. The scan typically takes about five minutes, depending on the type of appliance being made.

A bite registration is also taken during the same visit to record the jaw position used to fabricate your appliance.

What is The Process of Taking a Digital Impression?

Here is what you can expect when receiving a TMJ splint, orthotic, or oral appliance for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) at Trinity TMJ & Facial Pain Specialists:

  1. Evaluation and recommendation: Your doctor will determine whether an appliance is appropriate for you and recommend a suitable type.

  2. Digital impressions and bite registration: We will scan your teeth and record the jaw position needed to fabricate your appliance.

  3. Laboratory fabrication: Your digital records will be sent to a dental laboratory, where your custom appliance will be made.

  4. Fabrication time: TMJ appliances typically take approximately 2 weeks, while oral appliances for OSA generally take 4–6 weeks. Timing may vary depending on the appliance type and model.

  5. Fitting and adjustments: At your fitting appointment, your doctor will check the fit and bite, make adjustments as needed, and explain how to wear and care for your appliance.
