Does Botox Help With Migraines?
Learn about one of the treatment, Botox injections, to help relieve migraines.
The simple answer is: Yes for chronic migraine.
Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is FDA-approved for the prevention of headaches in adults with chronic migraine. It isn't established for every type of migraine and the benefits and side effects of treatment vary from person to person.
Clinical studies have shown Botox can significantly improve quality of life and reduce the impact of headache in adults with chronic migraine, as measured by the Migraine-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (MSQ) and Headache Impact test (HIT). (Lipton et al. 2011)
How Many Years Does a Migraine Last?
Migraine is a neurological condition that can recur for years or even decades. Its frequency and severity may change throughout life. It is more common in women, particularly during their 30s and 40s (Sakai et al 1997). Treatment can help reduce the frequency, severity, and impact of attacks.
An individual migraine headache typically lasts 4–72 hours when untreated or unsuccessfully treated (ICHD-3). An attack may include four phases: prodrome, aura, headache, and postdrome, although not everyone experiences every phase. Symptoms before and after the headache can extend the overall duration.
