TMJ Disorders & Headaches
Headaches are among the most common symptoms associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Studies have shown that more than 60% of patients with TMD experience headaches, while nearly 60% of patients with headaches also have TMD(Temporomandibular disorder and headache prevalence: A systematic review and meta-analysis, Pankaew Yakkaphan, 2022).
Migraine, tension-type headache, and TMD frequently coexist and may influence one another. In many patients, successful management of chronic jaw pain requires identifying and treating an underlying headache disorder in addition to addressing the jaw joints and muscles.
Not all facial pain or tooth pain originates from the teeth or jaw joints. Likewise, headache disorders do not always present primarily as head pain. Migraine, cluster headache, and other headache disorders may present as facial pain, jaw pain, tooth pain, ear pain, ear fullness, or neck pain.
In fact, approximately 34% of patients with cluster headache seek dental care before receiving the correct diagnosis, and 16% undergo unnecessary tooth extraction(Japanese Society of Orofacial Pain, Patient Education Poster: Neurovascular Toothache, 2022).
As an Orofacial Pain Specialist, we evaluate both TMJ disorders and primary headache disorders, recognizing that these conditions often overlap and require a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment.
Because many headache and neurologic conditions can mimic dental or TMJ pain, an accurate diagnosis is essential. Our goal is not simply to treat the location of your pain, but to identify its true source and provide the most appropriate, evidence-based treatment.
Treatment Options
Treatment is individualized based on your diagnosis and may include one or a combination of the following therapies:
• Comprehensive headache evaluation
• Medication management
• Trigger point injections
• Peripheral nerve blocks
• Botox® injections (when appropriate)
• Collaboration with neurologists and primary care physicians, rheumatologists, and other healthcare providers when appropriate
• Lifestyle modification and preventive strategies
Our Treatment Philosophy
• TMJ disorders are often multifactorial, and no single treatment is appropriate for every patient.
• Rather than providing the same treatment for everyone, we carefully identify the underlying cause of your symptoms and develop an individualized, evidence-based treatment plan tailored to your specific diagnosis.
• We believe successful treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis—not simply treating symptoms. Our goal is to identify the source of your pain, educate you about your condition, and provide personalized care using the least invasive and most effective treatment options available.
