TMJ pain (Jaw pain)
Jaw pain and dysfunction care

Do you experience any of the following?
• Jaw joint pain (TMJ pain)
• Jaw arthritis
• Difficulty opening or closing your mouth
• Jaw locking
• Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds in the jaw joint
• Jaw muscle pain, tightness, or fatigue
• Teeth clenching or grinding (bruxism)
• Ear pain, ear fullness, or ringing in the ears
• Headaches associated with jaw pain
• Pain while chewing or talking
Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation
Every patient receives a thorough evaluation to identify the underlying cause of their symptoms.
Your evaluation may include:
• Comprehensive medical and dental history
• Examination of the jaw joints, jaw muscles, bite, head, neck, and cranial nerves
• Functional assessment of jaw movement
• 3D CBCT imaging when clinically indicated
• MRI or additional imaging when appropriate
• Review of previous dental treatment and imaging
• Collaboration with your dentist, physician, or other specialists when needed
Rather than simply treating symptoms, our goal is to accurately diagnose the source of your pain and develop an individualized treatment plan.
TMJ Disorders & Associated Symptoms
TMJ disorders rarely occur in isolation.
Research has shown that more than 60% of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) experience headaches, while nearly 60% of patients with headaches also have TMD.
TMJ disorders frequently coexist with migraine, tension-type headache, ear pain, facial pain, neck pain, sleep disorders, and teeth clenching or grinding. Because these conditions often influence one another, successful treatment requires identifying and addressing all contributing factors, not just the jaw joint itself.
Treatment Options
Treatment is individualized based on your diagnosis and may include one or a combination of the following:
• Custom TMJ orthotic (oral appliance)
• Trigger point injections
• Peripheral nerve blocks
• Botox® injections (when clinically appropriate)
• Physical therapy
• Home exercise program
• Medication management
• Behavioral and habit modification
• Stress management and lifestyle modification
• Additional imaging, such as MRI, when clinically indicated
• Collaboration with neurologists, ENT physicians, dentists, physical therapists, primary care physicians, pain management specialists, and other healthcare providers
Comprehensive Follow-Up Care
TMJ disorders often require ongoing monitoring and treatment adjustments.
We carefully monitor your symptoms, jaw function, bite, and treatment response, making adjustments as necessary to optimize long-term outcomes.
Our goal is to restore comfortable jaw function, relieve pain, and improve your quality of life while minimizing the need for invasive treatment.
Our Philosophy
Not all jaw pain is caused by a TMJ disorder, and not every TMJ disorder requires the same treatment.
Successful treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis, not simply treating symptoms.
Because TMJ disorders often overlap with headache disorders, ear pain, facial pain, sleep disorders, and neurologic conditions, we take a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to identify the true source of your symptoms and develop the most appropriate treatment plan for each individual patient.
Based on your diagnosis, we create an individualized treatment plan, which may include:
• Custom TMJ orthotic (oral appliance)
• Trigger point injections
• Peripheral nerve blocks
• Botox® injections
• Medications
• Physical therapy
• Lifestyle and habit modification
Our goal is to relieve pain, improve jaw function, and help you return to your daily activities comfortably.
